Alexandr Drevin

(1889-1938)

Alexander Drevin was born in Latvia in 1889 and was a painter of landscapes, portraits, genre painting and still life. He attended the art school in Riga with Vilhelm Purvitis. In 1914 he traveled to Moscow and studied with Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. He became a member of the Green Flower Association of Avant-Garde Artists and was a member of the Russian Institute for Art Culture (INChUK) in 1920/21. . In 1922 he was invited to the first Russian art exhibition in the Van Diemen Gallery in Berlin. His first artistic work was based on impressionism. After his phase of constructivist and abstract painting, his art developed into a realistic representation. Alexander Drevin was arrested and shot in 1938.
