Bernhard Klein

(1888-1967)

Bernhard Klein was born in Hamburg in 1888 and was a German painter, set designer, graphic artist and animated film artist. He was a founding member of the Berlin November group and campaigned for the liberation of art from any academic or state claims. Klein experimented with many styles. The early works can be assigned to the New Objectivity and show a naive, poetic and dreamy world. During this time, atmospheric port and ship images predominate. In the 1930s he travelled to Venice and his paintings were more oriented towards Cubism. His works now testify to geometric interlocking with overwhelming colors. Bernhard Klein died in Berlin in 1967.
