Edgar Chahine

(1874-1947)

Edgar Chahine was born in Vienna in 1874 and was a French painter and radisher of Armenian descent. His artistic career began with his studies in Constantinople. Following the advice of the Armenian painter Milkon Tiratzuyan, he continued his studies in Italy. In 1892 he was a student at the Mechitarist High School in Venice and at the same time studied at the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia with the painter Antonio Ermolao Paoletti and the sculptor Antonio Dal Zotto. From 1895 he stayed in Paris and studied at the Académie Julian. From 1896 to 1899 he exhibited his works at the Société des Artistes Français. In 1897 the art critic Loys Delteil and the graphic dealer Edmond Sagot noticed his etching exhibited in the Galerie de Bodinière. He received gold medals for his engravings at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and at the 5th International Biennale in Venice in 1903. Chahine received French citizenship in 1925. From 1905 he illustrated works by Anatole France, Octave Mirbeau, Gabriel Mourey, Colette, Gustave Flaubert, Edmond and Jules de Goncourt and Paul Verlaine.

Edgar Chahine starb 1947 in Paris.
