Rica Fuentes Martinez

Rica Fuentes Martinez (born 1977 in Barcelona,ES) lives and workes in Vienna.
After training as a photographer and media designer, she studied as an
extraordinary student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2008/09 in the
Contextual Painting class (Ashley Hans Scheirl and Jakob Lena Knebl).
As early as 2017, she began her series „Grund-Risse“ (Floor Plans), combining
art and science in her work and transcribing them into visual art.

About my Work:
„Rica Fuentes Martínez’s work spans drawing, watercolor, and crocheted
objects, exploring the intersections of biology, history, and socio-political
critique. She meticulously illustrates complex systems, from various types of
neurons and human digestive tracts to the footprint of a beetle.
A strong feminist lens critiques patriarchal structures; she addresses the
marginalization of the female gender by referencing the healing power of the
vulva (“Brust III”) and the history of genital mutilation (“Brust II”).
Her drawings often merge anatomical or biological imagery with systemic
critiques, such as depicting the parliament’s floor plan as male genitalia or
linking the invention of the postal service to the origins of capitalism. Her
crocheted objects bring microscopic life, like bacteriophages, and complex
