Zoran Music

(1909-2005)

Zoran Music was born in 1909 and worked as a Slovenian-Italian painter and graphic artist. From 1930 to 1934 he completed his art studies in Zagreb, Croatia. Then he worked as a freelance artist and traveled several times to Spain and Dalmatia. Music found its destination in Venice. After the Second World War, the end of which he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp, he found his second home in Paris. He took part in the Venice Biennale several times, in 1955 also in “documenta I” in Kassel and received numerous international awards. In 2002 he was accepted as an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His artistic representations show barren landscapes of Dalmatia and Italy. He paints Venice and Paris as urban contrasts to his landscapes. From 1950 Music redeveloped its landscapes and created a weave of ornaments that evolved into abstraction. At the same time he creates portraits and everyday scenes of farmers and fishermen. These works are increasingly abstract and are created using printmaking techniques. After this artistic phase, which lasted until 1963, Music creates landscapes that increasingly show an anthropomorphic conception. In his series „We are not the last“ he dealt with his memories of Dachau. This series contains visualizations of the horror he experienced. Then he creates pictures from his Venetian homeland and self-portraits with subdued tones. Zoran Music dealt with the questions of human existence and these questions become visible in his artistic work.
