Josef Winkler was born in Vienna in 1925, where he first studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt, then at the Akademie der bildenden Künste with Josef Dobrowsky and Herbert Boeckl. Winkler's artistic work at this time followed the school of Viennese Fantastic Realism, whereby he already developed a certain stylistic individuality. He then took a break from art and devoted himself to the art trade for a long time. It was not until 1990 that he became artistically active again. Influenced by the artists and forms of abstract expressionism, the artist showed great versatility and since then his work can be attributed to Informel. His paintings are characterised by a striking pastiness of the applied materials, which he plays with on canvas or wood.
