Maria Corte

María Corte (born 1983, Barcelona) is a Catalan-Argentinian painter and illustrator who stands out in the contemporary art scene for her colorful and energetic works. She studied at the Escola Massana in Barcelona and graduated in illustration in 2009. Since then, she has enjoyed considerable success both nationally and internationally, working with renowned clients such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Adobe, and Apple.

Corte remains keen to experiment and explore new techniques and formats. Her work reflects her biographical history, in particular her family’s experience of migration when they fled to Spain in 1976 to escape the Argentine dictatorship. These “transits” between cultures and artistic forms of expression shape her work, which often has ironic and conceptual dimensions.

Her works combine Cubist and Fauvist influences and convey a dynamic, sensual image of women, which is particularly evident in her portraits and cityscapes. The cities she paints—including Barcelona, New York, Madrid, and Havana—come to life in her works in a characteristic way.
