Anton Räderscheidt

(1892-1970)

Anton Räderscheidt was born in Cologne in 1892. The German painter attended the Cologne School of Applied Arts from 1910. He completed a drawing teacher seminar with Lothar von Kunowksi at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts. Then he studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf with Eduard von Gebhardt. He opened his first studio in Cologne in 1913. Räderscheidt had to interrupt his studies by participating in the First World War and passed his state examination as a drawing teacher with distinction after 1917. In 1918 he married the artist Marta Hegemann and from 1919 he worked as a freelance artist. He made the acquaintance of Franz Wilhelm Seiwert, Heinrich Hoerle, Hans Arp and Wilhelm Fick and founded the Stupid group with them and others. With this group, Räderscheidt organized exhibitions in his studio. His first presentation of works in a public exhibition followed in 1920. In 1934 the artist made a study visit to the German Academy in Rome and separated from his wife Marta Hegemann. When German modernism was described by the National Socialists as degenerate, Anton Räderscheidt’s pictures were also destroyed. He fled to France with his partner Ilse Salberg-Metzger, a Jew. After the German occupation of France, Räderscheidt was imprisoned in the Les Milles internment camp and his studio in Paris was looted. After his escape in 1942, Räderscheidt had to flee again, this time to Switzerland. In 1947, after the death of Ilse Salberg-Metzger, he returned to Paris. In 1949 he moved to Cologne with Gisèle Boucherie, who he married 1963. In 1967 Anton Räderscheidt suffered a stroke, which resulted in impaired perception. The artist died in 1970 at the age of 77.

Anton Räderscheidt was a painter of the New Objectivity and is considered an extraordinary artist personality on the Rhenish art scene. In the 1920s ‘‘the lonely couple’’ in particular became the central part of his iconography. He reflected the problem of alienation and the distance between the sexes through the contrast of the representation of typified, often night and sporty women and stiff men in dark suits, who represented the contemporary type of employee.
