Curt Stenvert

(1920-1992)

Curt Stenvert was an Austrian avant-garde who initially worked as a painter. His artistic practice gradually expanded to include filmic works and object art. His works are still internationally well received today.

He received his artistic training through his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. There he studied with Albert Paris Gütersloh and Fritz Wotruba, whereby he dealt with aspects of movement and perspective. This resulted in his aluminum-plexiglass sculptures. His cinematic works were also shaped by his engagement with movement. Movement became a central motif in his works. Stenvert shows the viewer the biological, psychological, sociological and philosophical conditions of human existence. He developed experimental, feature-length and documentary films, which have received international awards. He had solo exhibitions in museums in Sweden, Italy and Germany and took part in the 1966 Venice Biennale. Stenvert is constantly concerned with the social aspect and he translates his impressions and thoughts of student unrest, social protests and anti-war activism in his works on a formal level.
