Eduard Angeli

(*1942)

Austria – Contemporary Art – Abstract Art – Eduard Angeli

Vita:

Eduard Angeli studied with Robin Christian Andersen at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After graduating, he moved to Istanbul, where he taught painting at the academy. In addition to this job, he worked at Bakirköy Hospital and helped mentally ill people. Due to the political situation in Istanbul, however, he decided to move back to Vienna in 1971, and has lived in Venice since 2005. In 1981 he enjoyed his first solo exhibition in Salzburg. In addition to numerous exhibitions, his work has also been honored with numerous awards. Among other things, he received the Theodor Körner Prize, the City of Vienna Prize and the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna.

Work:

Eduard Angeli’s work is characterized by large-format panel paintings in which he tells static, quiet, almost archaic stories. Typical of his paintings is the art of depicting a world without people. The unique thing is that the presence of figures is not lacking in his works, on the contrary, the viewer is gripped by both the silence and the emptiness and enjoys the moment of the prevailing mood. Eduard Angeli’s early work was characterized by strong suggestive color surfaces. In contrast to this, in his later work he presents a certain sobriety and asceticism in the choice of materials and colors. The majority of his pictures are created on rough and unprimed canvas and the choice of colors is mostly limited to shades of gray. Eduard Angeli mainly paints with oil paints, but over time you can see the trend that he is increasingly turning to natural products such as chalk, ash and charcoal.
