Eduardo Roca

Eduardo Roca was born in Almería in 1973 and has lived and worked as a painter and draftsman in Vienna since 2009. He is married to the Viennese artist Adele Razkövi. He studied at the University of Fine Arts in Granada.

Since the beginning of his career, Roca has moved with a high level of technical skill, a feeling for light and color in the classic genres of landscape, still life and portrait, with landscapes representing the majority of his oeuvre. One quickly recognizes that the artist’s technical skills are a motor for constant further development: Ro-ca perfects the choice of the cut-out, the selection and reduction of the color palette, light as a design factor and is repeatedly involved in the direct experience of urban situations. Roca questions the landscape genre as such by choosing and artistically charging subjects that at first glance have nothing to do with a landscape, such as factory grounds or construction sites. A high point of this development and at the same time the turning point to the imaginary landscapes are variations that he paints from a motif and combines into a complete work, such as the „Variaciones“. 25 views of an inconspicuous – real – house result in an impressive overall ensemble and show in concentrated form the possibilities of expression and artistic enhancement that an intrinsically banal motif can experience. This has nothing to do with a landscape in the traditional sense.

This multiplication can no longer be increased and so Roca takes a radical approach to designing his landscapes as a whole and thus reducing them. The result is mostly extensive, deserted landscapes with a mystical light, whose attempt to locate it regionally is bound to fail. Since the landscapes are constructed, nothing about them is random: people do not appear. They are only remembered by buildings, but much more by their remains, which create such a morbid feeling and push the viewer into the role of a late survivor. The deserted people are deceptive, however, because it is the viewer who is supposed to liven up and experience the scenery and the work is a clear challenge to them. Roca uses the almost godlike freedom to create landscapes for mostly unusual breadth and depth.
