Egon Hofmann

(1884-1972)

Egon Hofmann was born in Kleinmünchen, Linz, in 1884. The Austrian painter and poet first studied law in Munich, Vienna and Innsbruck. During his studies there were stays in Paris. After studying law, he studied painting in Stuttgart and Dresden. In 1918 he was a co-founder of the artists‘ union ‘‘Der Ring‘‘. In 1922 Hofmann re-founded the artists‘ association MAERZ in Linz, which was banned in 1939 and in 1952 the third re-founding was carried out by Hoffmann. In 1972 Egon Hofmann died as a result of an accident with a tram.

Clear, often almost geometrical forms, reduced formal language and a strict image structure are attributes that can be attributed to the landscape paintings by Egon Hofmann. The legally trained painter had a penchant for order and clarity and also uses this rigor in his compositional structure and thus refuses to be accommodated quickly. As an experienced alpinist and excellent skier, Egon Hofmann has very special access to mountain and winter landscapes, which he deals with again and again in all creative periods. The monumentality of the mountains, the preoccupation with the color of the snow and the respect for nature can be felt in all alpine works. His highly esteemed graphics – mostly woodcuts or drypoint etchings – often deal with alpine motifs. His frequent travels create landscape motifs from several continents, whereby his expressive colors often show unexpected effects, especially in tropical motifs.

Of particular importance in Egon Hofmann’s work are the mostly small-format still lifes, which stand out due to their poetic charisma and often approach formally a two-dimensional painting. The carefully chosen color scheme, which alternates between expressive and rather restrained colors, is particularly convincing here. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. Much of his work is now in the Royal Cabinet of Prints and Drawings in Dresden, the Albertina in Vienna, the Upper Austrian State Museum, the Neue Galerie in Linz and the Galerie Lehner in Vienna.
