Ernst Gradischnigg

Ernst Gradischnig was born in Wiendorf in Carinthia in 1949. He is a member of the Carinthian and Salzburg Art Association and lives and works as a freelance artist in Moosburg, Carinthia. Gradischnig studied at the Académie École ABC de Paris, after which he began training in printing in Salzburg with Prof. Herbert Breiter. Then he founded his own lithography workshop in Klagenfurt in 1978. After a stay in Paris in 1989, he learned the technique of ceramic wall design from Karl Schuessler in Wolfsberg in 1990. Since 1979 he has taken numerous study trips around the world, including Africa, France, Russia, Italy and many more. His works have been presented in exhibitions at home and abroad since 1973 and are owned by the Albertina Vienna, the Landesgalerie Klagenfurt and the Leopold Vienna Collection, among others. Ernst Gradischnig feels his way from the graphic, from the drawing to a topic, but the color remains his central means of expression and design. Even if Gradischnig’s subtle color painting goes to the limits of abstraction in some pictures, he never questions the objectivity. Delicacy, poetry and sensitivity characterize his watercolors and oil paintings. His atmospheric landscapes are dedicated to his leitmotifs such as the island of Pag, the island of Djerba or the quarry in Töschling.

“I am a person who lives from nature, who loves the positive and the beautiful, has many images in my head that keep me busy. I draw from this intellectual archive for my work process and I am happy when the circle closes… ”, says Ernst Gradischnig about his work.
