Franz Heckendorf

(1888-1962)

Franz Heckendorf was born in Berlin in 1888. First he studied at the Kunstgewerbemu-seum and at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1909 Franz Heckendorf had his first exhibition in the Berlin Secession. The landscapes of the Balkans and the two-stream country, which Heckendorf saw as an aviator in the war, are increasingly motifs of his early work, which he paints in his pictures, which are committed to impressionism. In later times, Heckendorf is more and more about the representation of impressions and not more about the reproduction of nature and so he develops his own style, which is strongly oriented towards expressionism and testifies to an intense and powerful color. In addition to oil paintings, he also makes pastels, watercolors and graphics. During the time of National Socialism, which called the works degenerate, the conditions for the artist became more difficult. In 1943 Heckendorf was arrested and taken to the Waldshut regional court prison. He and three other prisoners were accused of helping Berlin Jews who were threatened with deportation to extermination camps to flee to Switzerland. In 1945 he was liberated from Mauthausen concentration camp by US troops. Only after the war was Franz Heckendorf able to work as a professor at the Academy in Vienna and later in Salzburg. Heckendorf worked in Munich until his death in 1962.
