Hans Joachim Breustedt

(1901-1984)

Hans Joachim Breustedt was born in Steinbach in the Thuringian Forest in 1901. The German painter and graphic artist studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1919 and dealt with the design principles of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Lyonel Feininger. He aspired in his art for a harmonious synthesis between the representation of objects and abstraction. His works move between suggestive, abstracting objectivity and abstract works, which have geometric elements and are often referred to as composition. First he sketched his ideas for pictures with ink and brush. From the 1960s onwards he began to formulate his sketches into monochrome drawings. Stylistically, these works can be compared with Tachism and the East Asian ink-brush drawing. Most of his early work was lost in the bombing of Warsaw in 1939. Because of the Second World War he came to Upper Austria, where he married the graphic artist Margret Bilger in 1953. Breustedt was a member of the Vienna Art Club and the Upper Austrian artist group MAERZ. The artist died in 1984 in Vevey on Lake Geneva. During his lifetime he had only a few representative exhibitions, such as in the gallery of the city of Linz and in the Upper Austrian State Gallery. He was also involved in the Bauhaus touring exhibition in Europe and America between 1969 and 1971.
