Hans Staudacher

(1923-2021)

The Austrian painter Hans Staudacher was born on January 14, 1923 in St.Urban on the Ossiacher See in Carinthia. First he learned to paint as an autodidact. He was fascinated by the painters of the Nötscher Kreises. He attended Arnold Clementschitsch’s painting school in Carinthia. As a result, he moved to Vienna, but also lived temporarily in Paris. In the 1950s he became an active member of the Vienna Secession, which dedicated exhibitions to him as one of the most important Austrian exponents of the Informel. In 1956 he was selected to represent Austria at the Venice Biennale, in 1975 he was Austria’s representative together with Cornelius Kolig and Gotthard Muhr at the XIII. Biennial in São Paulo. Unfortunately, today he no longer paints or draws because his eyesight has deteriorated: „Otherwise the last picture would be: ‚Staudacher sticks in the picture‘ because I can’t get up.“

The artist dealt with different materials, but many of his works were created on paper. Although he began to paint abstractly at an early age, Staudacher’s roots lie in the figurative. In interviews he says that he always painted very quickly and then there was no time to think: “You probably didn’t think anything about the work!” I answered: “No, not anyway! It works through the muscles. „He often works on his works again after years. The spontaneity of the creation of the pictures can also be felt when looking at them. His works usually radiate an intensity that is very engaging. Furthermore, they are in one Expressive and gestural painting style. The artist also uses words and symbols in his works.

He is a member of the Forum Stadtpark and the Carinthian Art Association. He is considered a representative of tachism and action painting. He is also the founder of informal painting in Austria. However, the artist himself never wanted to write art history, but rather paint. Staudacher is one of the most famous living Austrian painters.
