Jakob Gasteiger

Jakob Gasteiger was born in Salzburg in 1953 and works as a freelance artist in Vienna and the Weinviertel. He studied stage design at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg. From 1976 he attended the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna. Gasteiger’s analytical painting thematizes, expands and breaks through the boundaries of painting, graphics and sculpture. His monochrome pictures have a relief-like structure, which is created by using a comb spatula when applying paint. In this mechanical process, color is used as a material in itself, in order to explore the limits of color and the questions of color materials. At the end of 2018, Gasteiger started using neon colors, which cause optical illusions and irritate the eye. His artistic work focuses on the painting process and painting. His pictures are created without any iconographic claim and are created through a system of actions.
