Karl Anton Fleck

(1928-1983)

Karl Anton Fleck was born in Vienna in 1928 and was an Austrian painter, mainly making drawings. At first he trained as a gravure retoucher and worked as such. He had great success with his landscape watercolors, but then began making portraits in 1968, which were exhibited in the Vienna Secession in 1971. In 1973 he became a member of the artists‘ association ,,der Kreis‘‘. After his marriage to Dina Pilek, he married the young artist Gisela Beinrücker in 1975. Until his retirement in 1980 he worked as a gravure retoucher. After the dissolution of the artists‘ association ,,der Kreis’’, he became a member of the Vienna Secession in 1982. In 1983 Karl Anton Fleck died in his studio at the age of 55.

Karl Anton Fleck developed his own style based on abstraction. His works are characterized by gaps and reduction to the essentials, as well as distortions and accumulations of details and symbols and a clear, distinctive outline for the exact definition of the contours. He gives his drawings accents and focal points through his deliberately created, dynamic bundles of lines. He likes to use wax crayons to enhance the effect. By wiping the graphite, he achieves a softer surface due to the gray tint. He asks himself questions about identity and his own identity and this often leads to a blurred line in his representations between humans and animal beings. Fleck’s oeuvre is estimated at around 3,000 works. His works can be found in private collections as well as in museums and art institutions, such as the Leopold Museum, the Albertina Vienna, the Museum of Modern Art (Mumok Vienna) and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
