Krause Heinrich

(1885-1983)

Heinrich Krause was born in Vienna in 1885 and was an Austrian painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Julius Berger, Christian Grie-penkerl, Kasimir Pochwalski and Albin Egger-Lienz. Krause was a member of the Vienna Secession and the Vienna Künstlerhaus. In addition to exhibitions in Vienna, his works have been shown in Rome, London, Düsseldorf, Graz, Trieste, Genoa and Bucharest.

Krause’s painting was initially determined by muted colors and has tended to dissolve forms since the 1920s. In the 1950s he began to paint landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes, which are characterized by his spontaneous design and his confident, loose brushstroke. A dry, almost chalky color palette is typical of his work.

Portraits are very important in Heinrich Krause’s work. The portrayed secure their own world in the picture through closed gestures or wandering gaze and only open up on closer inspection. The most famous portraits of his hand show Franz Lehar, Georg von Schönerer and Max Mell. The self-portraits of the artist, which are always to be understood as a self-questioning and regular assessment of the position, are particularly honest and informative. While Krause presented himself at a young age as a self-confident painter with a serious look who skillfully stages the utensils of his profession, his late self-portraits are an oppressive anticipation of his incipient blindness, which will ultimately end his work. The painter leaves out his own eyes in the portraits and yet it is not necessarily an empty gaze that the viewer encounters, but a direct, emotional absorption.

Heinrich Krause’s landscape paintings show, in addition to the influences of French Impressionism and its reception in Austria, above all a clear influence by Cezanne. Its vibrant color surfaces are the starting point for the development of an unmistakable unique style. Often with only two main colors and a strict compositional structure, the result is mostly deserted, formally strongly withdrawn landscapes that exude a proud grandeur.

Heinrich Krause gave decisive impulses to Austrian art of the 20th century and stands out from this period and its broad spectrum of artistic currents and styles as a singular and unswerving phenomenon.
