Markus Lüpertz was born in Reichenberg in 1941 and works as a German painter, graphic artist and sculptor. He lives and works in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf and Florence and has his studio in Teltow. He completed his artistic training at the Werkkunstschule in Krefeld with Laurens Goosens between 1956 and 1961. During his studies he worked in mining and road construction. He studied for one semester at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. From 1961 he worked as a freelance artist in Düsseldorf. Markus Lüpertz is one of the representatives of German neo-expressionism. Initially he painted representational motifs in an expressive style and created powerful and monumental representations. Painting is his central area of ​​creativity, in that from 1960 he introduced abstraction into his representational painting. Around 1970 he produced works with predominantly German themes, which testify to monumentality, earthy colors and a free brushstroke. Later on, Lüpertz dealt with cubist painting, among other things, and produced larger-than-life bronze sculptures, which called into question the classic ideals of beauty and mythological figures. Spatiality and objectivity come to the fore again and works are created that testify to a desired artificiality. From 1997 onwards Lüpertz mainly created landscape paintings. The picture surface is created by patches of color and grids and the landscape is rendered naturalistically. His connections to antiquity and renaissance, to humans and nature are shown repeatedly in his artistic works.
