Paul Kuhfuss

(1883-1960)

Paul Kuhfuss was born in Berlin in 1883 and was a German painter and draftsman. He first trained as a drawing teacher and then studied landscape painting at the Royal Academic University of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Kuhfuss was a member of the Association of Visual Artists, the German Association of Artists, the Association of Artists in Berlin North and the Association of Berlin Artists. In the meantime he works as an illustrator for several publishers. From 1912 to 1960 he took part in 173 exhibitions and around 5300 of his works are documented in the Paul Kuhfuss Archive.

In a letter to Otto Gorsolke in 1950, Kuhfuss’s artistic credo is expressed: “I would also like to give my art something other than just visual or aesthetic. This other will be difficult to define; but I want to suggest that there is something spiritual behind what is perceptible to the eye, which concerns the soul. With the recognition that we ourselves and everything that surrounds us belong to a cosmic whole, which works according to a meaningful law and which, despite all apparent aberrations into cruelty, ultimately strives for the absolute and spiritually ascertainable good, the human being should to be brought to thoughtfulness and self-observation, which makes him strive for the good as the beautiful. To modestly want to contribute a little here, including the awareness that I am still far from this goal, is actually always the intention of my art. ”- Paul Kuhfuss
