Robert Pötzelberger

(1856-1930)

Robert Pötzelberger was born in Vienna in 1856. He was an Austrian painter, sculptor and art professor. Pötzelberger studied from 1874 to 1878 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and made a trip to Italy in 1879. From 1880 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Ludwig Löfftz. From 1892 he held a professorship at the Grand Ducal Badischen Art School in Karlsruhe. In 1899 he moved to the Stuttgart Art School together with Carlos Grethe and Leopold von Kalckreuth. In 1926 he retired. The artist was a member of the German Association of Artists and in 1896 co-founder of the Karlsruhe Association of Artists. He died in 1930 on the island of Reichenau on Lake Constance.

Robert Pötzelberger’s painting was shaped by his academic career and French impressionism. His artistic work changed from historicism to near-natural art in southern Germany. In addition to his genre and landscape painting, he also made lithographs. The figures shown appear softly and easily placed in the pictorial space. The mountains and hills of the landscape representations are just as soft and flowing. Some works also show a broader and coarser painting style, but the focus is always on conveying the desired mood.
