Rudolf Holzinger

(1898-1949)

Rudolf Holzinger was born in Vienna in 1898 and worked as an Austrian painter. After participating in the First World War and in Italy, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1929 he married the later writer Dorothea Zeemann. In 1930 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus and in 1931 received the State Prize for Painting. After studying in France, he mainly worked as a fresco painter in Vienna. In addition to portraits, he created numerous monumental wall decorations for religious and profane buildings, drafts for large-format representations in various techniques (glass windows, theater curtains etc.). His work includes the gable fresco of the Capuchin Church in Vienna from 1936. He also created monumental wall decorations , so the framing painting of the Sacred Heart Altar in the Neuottakringer parish church. As a painter he mainly created landscapes, but also some portraits. Rudolf Holzinger died in Vienna in 1949.
