Sergius Pauser

(1896-1970)

Sergius Pauser was born in Vienna in 1896 and was known as a landscape and portrait painter. In 1914 he traveled to Rome and an artistic interest developed for the first time. At first he studied architecture, but after the First World War painting moved into his focus. He studied from 1919 to 1924 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl, Ludwig von Herterich, Max Dör-ner and Karl Caspar. Pauser was based on the art of Carl Hofer, Max Beckmann and Otto Dix. In 1927 he became a member of the Vienna Secession, which opened many doors to him. Initial works can be assigned to the Sach ‘New Objectivity‘ ‘and bear witness to cool colors, strict forms and convey a feeling of melancholy. In the course of his artistic development, his later works testify to a looser and freer painting style. He worked primarily as a portraitist, but also painted still lifes and landscapes. His representations give the impression that people and objects freeze in an infinite moment. After exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and the USA, he received great international recognition around 1930. In 1931 he received the Honorary Prize of the City of Vienna, in 1932 the Austrian State Prize and in 1934 took part in the Venice Biennale. Pauser traveled to Italy, France and Switzerland to broaden his artistic horizons. In 1942 he was appointed head of portrait painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Sergius Pauser died in 1970.
