Sidnoie Springer

(1935-2014)

idnoie Springer aka Sidonie Staeger was a painter and graphic artist and was born in Buchwaldsdorf, Bohemia in 1878. Springer began her training at the School of Applied Arts in Gablonz an der Neisse. In 1897 she moved to the School of Applied Arts in Prague, where she learned decorative painting from J. Schikaneder. After completing her studies, she stayed for a short time in French-speaking Switzerland and in Vienna, where she attended the graphic teaching and research institute and later traveled to Trautenau. From 1908 to 1923 she lived in Munich with her husband, the German painter Ferdinand Staeger. Between 1925 and 1926 she was back in Prague and then returned to the Giant Mountains. Springer was a member of the Munich Artists Cooperative and mainly created landscape paintings and figural studies, which she presented in galleries in Prague and Vienna.

Sidonie Springer creates her works according to her need for devotion to the world and with great sensitivity. Her ability to naturally transfer the materiality of what she sees into the surface of the picture is remarkable. Her photorealistic accuracy in the drawing has already been praised by contemporaries: „And especially today, when – let’s be frank – clumsy inability is often enough expressed in presumptuous prophetic gestures, she has all the right to be noticed and to be assessed according to her abundance of ability“ (quoted according to Prof. K. Riss in: German Art and Decoration, illustrated monthly magazine, Volume XXII, Oct. 1919, p. 161 ff.). Sidonie Springer’s works testify to a drawing virtuosity and a mystical realism.
