Susanne Purviance

(*1954)

Susanne Purviance was born in Linz in 1954. She completed her artistic studies between 1974 and 1979 at the University for Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz in the master class for type and book design. After graduating, she went on study trips to Italy, Spain, France and Greece. Susanne Purviance has had numerous exhibitions and participations in exhibitions at home and abroad. Her works are in numerous public and private collections.

Susanne Purviance is a colored painter. In every sense. In their pictures there are bright red cars in front of bright green gas stations, floods of color, for example on the market pictures that transform our Linz Südbahnhof into a lush bazaar. They express, as well as the glaring light, the colorful white walls, the bulging landscapes, a lust for life that always includes the struggle for life in connection with the depicted subject. Stories. Susanne Purviance studied book design – a long time ago – at the Linz Art University. She shows me her diploma theses: Rimbaud and Kaschnitz. Written and illustrated by hand. On handmade Japanese paper. Self bound. Unique pieces of unbelievable precision and urgency. I would like a graphics publisher to reprint these two books. On hand-made Japanese paper, of course. Perhaps that was where what began for the time being in this exhibition, called “Stories”.
