Vilma Eckl

(1892-1982)

Austria – Art of the Interwar Period – Expressionism – Vilma Eckl

CV :

In order to be able to pursue her talent, Vilma Eckl decides to train in the private painting school of Berta von Tarnoczy, Rosa Scherer and Tina Kofler. Not only German Expressionism, especially the Munich group “Der Blaue Reiter”, but also Matthias May’s Linz painting school were formative for her works. Numerous study trips and stays in Italy, Yugoslavia, Germany and Switzerland consolidated her style and were for her artistic Formative for development. Her work has received numerous awards, including the Culture Prize of the State of Upper Austria and the City of Linz in 1946, the Ring of Honor of the City of Linz in 1962 and the Adalbert Stifter Prize of the State of Upper Austria in 1961.

Plant :

Vilma Eckl’s extensive work spans a period of more than seventy years and was published in addition to two book publications (Bruno Grimschitz: „Vilma Eckl“, Verlag Galerie Welz, Salzburg 1955, and Erich Widder: „Vilma Eckl – Wesen und Werk“, Oberösterreichischer Landesverlag 1965) was honored in a large number of exhibitions and exhibition participations at home and abroad. The early work of the artist was characterized by the watercolor painting technique, which was in the foreground. Vilma Eckl later discovered her love for oil painting. She further developed this technique until she found the painting style that was perfect for her. Charcoal and colored chalk work became her trademark. This technique particularly emphasized the effect of her moving objects and corresponded to her artistic intention to give her pictures a gestural expression. Vilma Eckl’s work is formative for the possibility of depicting both dance and the description of the rural world of work. With her technique, she manages to create a tension-laden color rhythm that is perceived as a line and seems to anticipate the next movement. This unique charcoal and colored chalk painting is a fundamental and significant contribution to art history.
