Willi Geiger

(1878-1971)

Willi Geiger was born in Schönbrunn near Landshut in 1878. He received his training from 1902 to 05 at the Munich Academy with Franz von Stuck and Peter Halm. He expands his artistic horizons through study trips. His works, which were created in Rome, caused a scandal because of the satirical-sexual subjects. During his time in Munich some illustrations were created. In 1912 he traveled to Spain, where he was particularly fascinated by bullfighting. In 1914 he published series of war events committed to the German war euphoria. Geiger was at war with France, where he was confronted with the cruel world of war. Many portraits were made at this time. His style switched between impressionism and linear ornamentation and now developed into an expressive painting style. In Munich he tries to find his way back to a normal life after the war. From 1921 to 1923 Geiger taught life drawing at the Munich School of Applied Arts. In 1928 he went to the State Academy in Leipzig. In 1933 his art was classified as degenerate due to National Socialism. The artist continued to paint expressionist pictures after his retreat to a farm on the Chiemsee. After the end of the war Geiger became professor of painting at the Munich Kun-stakademie. Willi Geiger dies in Munich in 1971.
