Wolfgang Herzig

(*1941)

Wolfgang Herzig was born in Styria in 1941 and lives and works in Vienna. After training at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Graz and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Sergius Pauser, his artistic work began in the direction of representational and critical art. The exhibition “Realities” in the Vienna Secession helped him for the first time in 1960. At this time he created works with powerful colors and ornamental-figural compositions. The human being becomes a central motif of his works. The everyday and the pure reality are presented with dignity through the representation of the naked body. From 1970 onwards, Herzig’s art developed in a more structured and gentle direction. Successive color gradations and a clear formal structure dominate in his pictures. His artistic career is evidence of an extraordinary stylistic development in the direction of his typical plasticity of the body and a simultaneous two-dimensionality. He developed a tendency towards clay colors and delicate contrasts.
